Equipment

  • Jar or glass
  • Pan
  • Scoop or spoon
  • Large (boba) straw optional

Ingredients

  • ½ cup quick-cooking tapioca pearls also known as boba pearls, tapioca balls
  • 1,5 tablespoon sugar white sugar, granulated sugar, etc
  • 3,5 tablespoon hot chocolate mix
  • cup boiling hot water
  • 1 cup milk of choice I used unsweetened oat milk

Optional

  • plenty of ice cubes if serving cold
  • sweetener of choice sugar, honey, agave syrup, maple syrup, etc

Instructions

  • Add tapioca pearls to a pan full of boiling hot water.
  • Let simmer for about 5-6 minutes. If you want the pearls to be softer, cook them for longer. If you want them chewier, cook them for less long.
  • Remove from heat and strain through a sieve. If you don't have a sieve, simply scoop out the balls with a spoon/spatula.
  • Immediately cover with sugar. Give it a good stir. Set aside.
  • In a mug/bowl, combine hot chocolate mix and boiling hot water (⅓ cup).
  • To serve, add tapioca balls to a large glass. Cover with plenty of ice cubes. Then add milk and the hot chocolate mixture.
  • Stir well and add more sweetener if desired.

Notes

Important: Always taste before serving - and adjust the sweetness to your own personal taste. Everyone enjoys their boba differently!
  • Don't have a hot chocolate mix? Make your own by combining equal amounts of sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder
  • I used quick-cooking tapioca balls that take 5 mins to cook. Always check the instructions on your packaging to see how long they need.
  • To serve HOT - Omit the ice cubes. Serve with warm milk (warm it up in a pan or a microwave).
  • If serving cold, use PLENTY of ice - it really makes all the different (lukewarm boba is not great)
  • Cover the cooked boba in sugar right away.
  • If you’re not using tapioca pearls, make sure to add more sugar to make up for the lack of sweetness.
  • Don’t prepare tapioca pearls in advance.
  • If you want it extra sweet, double the amount of chocolate mix.
  • Don't have a boba straw? Use a normal straw to drink it and a small spoon to scoop out the pearls.
