Equipment

  • Shot glasses
  • Shaker bottle/glass with a lid or bamboo whisk or milk frother

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder
  • cup water or more to taste

Instructions

Method 1: Shaking

  • Add sifted matcha to a shaker bottle (or any glass with a lid).
  • Add warm water (not boiling) - ideally about 175°F/ 80°C.
  • Secure the lid tightly. Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds until frothy and combined.
  •  Pour into a small serving glass. Enjoy immediately!

Method 2: Bamboo Whisk

  • Add sifted matcha to a small, wide bowl.
  •  Add hot water (ideally about 175°F/ 80°C).
  • Use a bamboo whisk in a zig zag motion to mix the matcha and water until frothy.
  • Pour into a shot glass and enjoy.

Method 3: Handheld Milk Frother

  • Add sifted matcha to a glass or jar.
  • Pour hot water (ideally about 175°F/ 80°C) over the matcha.
  • Use a milk frother/handheld electric whisk and mix carefully until frothy.
  • Transfer to a shot glass and enjoy.

Notes

  • Tip 1 - Quality Over Quantity. If you can, spring for high-quality matcha. This will ensure a bright (rather than dull) green color and the best taste.
  • Tip 2 - Sift It. Sifting matcha powder helps break down any clumps and creates a smoother texture.
  • Tip 3 - Not Boiled. Do not use boiled water. Matcha is delicate, so boiled water will change its flavor.
  • Tip 4 - Work It Out! If you're using Method 1, make sure to shake it vigorously. Aim for a minimum of 30 seconds - the longer, the better.
  • Tip 5 - Adjust Matcha. Adjust the amount of matcha to suit your taste preferences.
Sugar level - I don’t think this recipe needs sugar, but you can add some if you'd like. Make sure it dissolved properly or use a liquid sweetener like maple syrup and stir well.
