💌 Why I Love This Recipe

    • You can use ANY milk or sugar you want
    • No expensive ingredients
    • You need just 4 ingredients (plus ice cubes and water)
    • SUPER easy to customise
    • Way less sugar than store-bought boba
    • Considerably cheaper

And to make things even sweeter, I’ve prepared step-by-step photos & video for you.

Even if you’ve never tried or made boba before, you can make this recipe & nail it right away.

    🥛 Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this mango milk tea.

(PS - except from boba pearls, all of these ingredients are cheap & super easy to get)

Ingredients needed to make homemade mango milk tea.

    Ingredient Details

Milk - Just use whatever milk you have at hand. The creamier the better. I used oat milk.

Mango juice - sometimes called mango nectar. You can usually get it in most large supermarkets. If you really can’t find it, apple & mango juice or orange & mango juice also work well.

Boba / tapioca balls - Available in Asian supermarkets worldwide or online on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

Sugar - I used caster sugar (a type of granulated sugar). Literally any type of sugar will do the job. You can also use stevia or liquid sweeteners.

    🥄 Equipment

    You will need:

    • A pan for cooking boba pearls
    • A spoon or scoop
    • A large glass for serving
    • A large straw for serving

    ⏲️ Steps

TIP - This is a really quick overview of how to make milk tea. Want to skip my expert tips and FAQ? Just scroll to the bottom of this page for recipe details.

6 images showing how to make mango bubble milk tea.
    • 1. Make jasmine tea. Set it aside and let it cool.
    • 2 & 3. In a small pan, cook the tapioca pearls. Cover them with sugar and mix well.
    • 4. Add tapioca pearls to a serving glass.
    • 5. Optional step: add ice cubes.
    • 6. Then add mango juice, jasmine tea & milk.

    💡 Expert Tips

    • Once your tapioca pearls are cooked, cover them with sugar straight away & mix well.
    • The pearls taste best fresh - don’t let them sit around for hours.
    • Before serving, adjust to taste. Add more sweetener, a splash of milk or more juice.
    • Use reusable boba straws if you can - they’re easy to find online.
    • Serve it hot or cold.
    • Cold - use plenty of ice cubes.
    • I used jasmine tea from my local Asian supermarket. You can use tea bags or loose leaf tea.

    🥄 Cooking Boba

An overhead view of a glass full of milk tea.

    Never cooked boba before?

It doesn’t have to be hard at all!

Follow these tips and you’ll get it right:

    • If you can, use QUICK-COOKING tapioca pearls - they’re ready in just 5 minutes.
    • Aim for the consistency of a gummy bear.
    • If your boba is hard, it means it’s overcooked.
    • If it’s entirely soft & mushy, it means it’s undercooked.

TIP - When you’ve opened the tapioca pearls bag, make sure to securely close it again and store it in the fridge. You’ll need to use up the remaining boba within a few days (might vary depending on the brand you use).

    ❓FAQ

What does mango milk tea taste like?

It’s like a creamier version of mango juice! Fruity, sweet & super refreshing, but with a soothing, creamier twist.

It can be adjusted to taste, so the sweetness levels can range from slightly to very sweet.

How many calories are in this mango milk tea?

There are approx. 400 calories per one (very large) portion.

    Is this recipe vegan?

If you use dairy-free milk (such as oat, almond, soy, coconut, hemp, etc) this recipe is vegan.

    🌰 Variations

Three variations of milk tea next to each other on a flat grey surface.

You’d be surprised to see just how many variations of milk tea there are.

Here are some of my favourites:

    • Plain Jasmine Milk Tea: if you leave out the mango juice, you can enjoy a plain jasmine milk tea.
    • Tea flavours: You can experiment with tea flavours if you wish. For example, you could use black or white tea instead of green jasmine tea. Don’t let the bag sit in the water for too long, or it will be overpowering.
    • Tapioca pearl flavours: I used black sugar boba pearls. However, they come in different flavours - feel free to use whatever flavour you prefer. If you can get your hands on mango pearls, that would be ideal!

PS - You can still make this milk tea even without tapioca pearls. They’re a fun addition, but won’t affect the flavour.

    🧊 Serving

To serve, grab a tall glass and fill it with pearls. If serving cold, add ice cubes on top, then fill the glass with juice and milk.

To serve HOT - Don’t use ice cubes. Warm up the milk before serving.

I like using extra-wide boba straw to serve these. The pearls won’t pass through regular straws.

If you don’t have extra-wide straws, simply sip the drink through a regular straw, then use a spoon to scoop out the pearls.

    📦 Storing

When serving mango bubble tea, I recommend enjoying it as fresh as possible.

Don’t let it sit around for too long or the tapioca pearls will become sticky. Plus, the ice will melt.

If you do want to keep it for longer, follow these steps:

    • Store tapioca pearls separately. Place in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
    • Reserve ice cubes for later: only add them once you are ready to serve the drink.
    • Place the milk tea (without pearls or ice) in an airtight container. Place in the fridge for up to 2 days.
