- Make it with green, black, oolong, or herbal tea
- Can be infused with matcha too

Plus, I prepared expert tips & step-by-step photos below. Even if you've never made rose milk boba before, you can follow this recipe & nail it in your first go.
TIP - Many rose milk boba recipes require you to make your own rose syrup. Because I wanted to keep this as SIMPLE as possible, I simply used rose water. It's cheaper & quicker while still giving that dreamy rose flavor.
🥛 Ingredients
Here are the 5 ingredients you'll need (plus optional ice cubes)
Ingredient Notes
Rose water - This is simply distilled water flavored with roses. You can make it yourself, but I recommend grabbing it from a supermarket or online. It's a staple of Middle Eastern cuisine & should be pretty cheap (mine cost £1.35 for a 190ml bottle).
Tea - Any tea of your choice (black, green, matcha, oolong, white, etc). Use a teabag or loose leaf tea, whatever is handier for you.
Milk - I think oat milk or coconut milk work SO well in this drink. Feel free to use any other milk too - it all works.
Sugar - Brown sugar is great because it adds a rich caramel-like taste. It also pairs well with the brown sugar flavor boba.
Tapioca (boba) balls - I used brown sugar-flavored boba. Make sure to get quick-cooking boba pearls! They only take 5 or fewer minutes to make. Grab them from your local Asian supermarket, the Asian section of a large supermarket, or online (Amazon, eBay).
IMPORTANT TIP: You might have noticed I used rose petals and rosebuds in my images. This is for aesthetic purposes only. They don't add any flavor so feel free to skip them.
🥄 Equipment
- 2 tall glasses
- Saucepan
- Mug
- Large straw (optional!)

- Add cooked boba & ice cubes (optional) to a large glass.
- Then add (cooled) tea.
- Add rose water.
- Finish it off with milk (make sure it's cold).
Then stir & adjust the sweetness level if desired - add more sugar if needed.
*When cooking boba, always follow instructions on your own boba package. The cooking times vary per brand so keep this in mind.
💡 Pro Tips
- Cook boba pearls according to your personal preference.
- Want them hard & chewy? Then slightly undercook them.
- Prefer them super soft? Then cook them for longer.
- If serving cold, make sure to fill your entire glass with ice cubes before adding any liquids.
- Don't let cooked boba pearls stand around for too long or they'll get sticky.
- If you're making milk tea more often, try investing in reusable boba straws.
CRUCIAL Tip! Don't forget to adjust this recipe to taste! You might prefer it slightly sweeter or with more milk, more tea, more rose water, etc. Go ahead & customize it until you're perfectly happy with it!
❓FAQ
It tastes floral, creamy & refreshing, with a strong rose water aroma.
There are roughly 200 calories per 1 large glass in this boba (estimate only).
It most likely does, but this will depend on the type of tea you're adding to it.
For example, black and green tea do contain caffeine, whereas herbal or fruit teas don't.
You could also opt for decaf black/green tea if you're looking to avoid caffeine.
It's loaded with antioxidants! Plus, it's been used historically to help with digestion problems (Healthline).
🍫 Variations
Here are some fun ingredients you could use to customize this drink!
- Flavours: Vanilla extract, rose syrup, caramel syrup, chocolate syrup, various types of teas (you could even find rose tea and use that instead), coconut milk.
- Toppings: Rosebuds, rose petals, whipped cream, etc.
🍵 Serving
This drink can be served all year round, but is particularly satisfying on a warm day!
You will need large glasses to serve it. Large boba straws are recommended, but if you can't get them, simply use regular straws. Then use a long spoon to scoop out the pearls at the bottom.
To make sure the rose petals stay floating on top, use plenty of ice cubes (filling the whole glass with them).
In case you're serving it HOT, just make sure all the ingredients are piping hot before serving. No need to warm up rose water as we'll only be using a tiny amount, but the tea and milk should be hot.
📦 Storage
Although I highly recommend drinking it fresh, you can store this drink for later.
Transfer it to an airtight container/jar and keep in the fridge. Drink within 2 days.
Remember - store boba pearls separately and don't include ice cubes in the drink. They will melt & dilute it.
Extra trick - if you're trying out several different boba recipes, you might want to cook a larger batch of tapioca pearls.
You can then store them for later. Here's how to do that.
Cook the pearls as described in the recipe, then immediately cover them with a homemade syrup.
To make the syrup simply mix 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Bring this mixture to a boil and let simmer for 5-10 minutes. When finished, pour the syrup over freshly cooked boba pearls.
You can then let this mixture cool and store it in the fridge (in an airtight container) for up to 3 days.
