💌 Why I Love This Recipe

    • Just 5 ingredients
    • A soothing drink with a calming effect
    • Wonderful aroma
    • Beginner-friendly
    • Both metric & US measurements are included below
    • Easy step-by-step process

The perfect nourishment for your body & soul during those cold rainy days!

Important tip: Do NOT use lavender essential oils to make this drink. Most of them can be toxic & poisonous.

    🥛 Ingredients

These are the simple ingredients you'll need to make this soothing drink.

Ingredients needed to make black lavender milk tea.

    Ingredient Details

Almond milk - I use dairy-free milk (either oat or almond). Feel free to swap it out for coconut milk, soy milk, etc.

Tea - I used decaf Earl Grey tea but any black tea will work (either loose-leaf or tea bags). English breakfast tea is another great option.

Lavender buds - The key ingredient in this drink! Dried lavender buds are usually sold in the spices section of large health chains like Whole Foods & Trader Joe's. If you can't find them in-store, looking online will probably yield better results!

Maple syrup - I opted for maple syrup which adds a caramel-like and slightly nutty flavor. Feel free to substitute for white sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, etc.

Vanilla extract - Adds a rich, full, sweet note.

I also sprinkled some (optional) cinnamon on top.

Want a stronger flavor of lavender? Use a lavender-flavored fruit tea!

    🥄 Tools

    • 1 small saucepan
    • Sieve/strainer
    • 2 mugs
    • Kettle (optional)

    ⏲️ Steps

    • 1. Pour boiled / hot water into a mug. Add the tea bag. Let steep for approx. 5 minutes. Then set aside to cool.
    • 2. In the meantime, combine milk, lavender, vanilla & maple syrup in a small saucepan. Start on low heat and warm it up slowly until there is steam rising from the pan. Remove from heat.

    • 5 & 6. Pour the mixture through a sieve into two mugs. This will make sure no lavender buds remain in the final drink.

    • 7 & 8. Serve with a small lavender sprig (left) OR frothed milk on top (right). Simply use a milk frother or blender to froth the milk and spoon some on top.

Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired - it adds a lovely aroma!

    💡 Expert Tips

    • Adjust it to taste - you might prefer to make it sweeter or make the lavender flavor more/less intense.
    • It's normal for the drink to separate just a little. Simply stir it again before drinking.
    • Because this is meant to be a soothing tea you can drink before bed I recommend opting for decaf black tea (or other decaf tea).
    • Serve it piping hot.
    • You can use a custom amount of lavender according to your taste. Don't go overboard though! Too much lavender can make it taste a little soapy.
    • Prefer an extra creamy texture? Use some non-dairy creamer.
    • Make it sugar-free by using stevia instead of maple syrup or sugar.
    • Instead of serving it in a tall glass, I recommend serving it in a mug instead - this will help it maintain the right temperature.
    • Add ice cubes if you prefer a refreshing cold variation.

    ❓FAQ

A large bunch of dried lavender.
Where can I find edible lavender?

All lavender is edible - including the buds, stems & leaves.

However, I do recommend using dried culinary lavender you can find in food stores (as opposed to lavender from a flower shop).

What does this lavender milk taste like?

It's slightly floral, perfectly creamy, and rich/malty thanks to the tea.

Remember that the final taste will depend on your choice of milk.

Opt for one that you naturally enjoy as is! For me, it's oat or almond milk.

How many calories are in this lavender milk tea?

There are approx. 66 calories per portion.

    🌹 Variations

The recipe below provides a solid base for a warming cup of lavender tea.

If you'd like to experiment a little, you can infuse it with some extra flavors!

    Here are some great options:

    • Matcha: Swap out the black tea for matcha. It's packed to the brim with antioxidants and adds a lovely earthy flavor that pairs well with lavender.
    • Chamomile: Instead of using black tea you could opt for herbal tea instead. Chamomile is soothing & great if you're having trouble relaxing and falling asleep.
    • Mint leaves: Add a few mint leaves (fresh or dry) to your lavender milk. Heat up the mixture as the recipe describes & then strain. This makes it extra refreshing!
    • Rose water: Often used in skincare & fragrances, the lavender + rose water combination is brilliant! Simply add a teaspoon or two to your drink & stir well.
    • Food coloring: If you'd like the drink to have that signature lavender color, you could add some food coloring to it.

You could even decorate it with some extra toppings such as:

    • Whipped cream
    • Dried lavender buds
    • Caramel sauce
    • Chocolate sauce

    📦 Storage

Lavender milk tea in a white mug.

This tea is best enjoyed when fresh - serve it immediately after mixing all the ingredients.

Don't let it stand out at room temperature for too long.

If you'd like to store it for later, keep in mind it might separate a little.

I would recommend placing it in an airtight container and storing it in the fridge. Make sure to warm it up properly until piping hot before serving it again. Drink within 1-2 days.
