This ginger milk tea (adrak wali chai) is made in 10 minutes using minimal ingredients. Packed with health benefits, perfect for the winter season & made using fresh ginger root. The ideal way to relax after a long day!

Two mugs containing a frothy milk drink with a ginger root placed next to them.

This was inspired by my ginger turmeric tea recipe and pairs incredibly well with my date caramel slice.

Ginger milk tea is sometimes called adrak chai - in Indian adrak means ginger and chai means tea.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Simple ingredients
    • Made using fresh ginger root
    • No added sugar
    • Made with tea bags or loose tea
    • Ready in 10 minutes

Plus, it's SUPER good for you!

Ginger is related to many potential health benefits from reducing blood sugar & cholesterol to improving your digestion (Source).

    Ingredients

Tip - Check out the recipe card at the bottom for exact quantities.

All ingredients needed to make ginger milk tea placed on a flat surface.
    • Milk - I used almond milk but you can use soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or any other milk of your choice.
    • Ginger - The hero ingredient of this drink. It provides a slightly spicy flavor and can be adjusted to taste.
    • Hot water - For best results use freshly boiled water.
    • Strong black tea - Serves as a base for this recipe.
    • Ground Cinnamon - Gives it an extra comforting kick of flavor.

Optional - if you're a lover of sweet treats you may want to add a sweetener. Liquid sweeteners like maple or agave syrup work best.

    Steps

These are just a few quick steps to bringing this ginger milk tea recipe to life!

A collage of two images showing the first two steps in making ginger milk tea.
    • 1. Peel and cut ginger into small pieces. (Alternatively, you can grate it.)
    • 2. Add ginger to a pan & pour milk on top. Heat it up slowly until piping hot. Don't let it boil.
A collage of two images showing the last two steps in making ginger milk tea.
    • 3. In the meantime add tea to boiling water. Let steep for 4 minutes before removing the tea bag/leaves.
    • 4. Remove the ginger from your milk (by pouring it through a sieve).
    • Optional step - froth the milk using a milk frother or a blender.
    • 4. Pour the milk on top of your tea and sprinkle cinnamon on top.

    That's all!

Hint: If you want a stronger tea flavor use several bags of tea per cup or let them steep for longer.

    Top tips

    • For a stronger ginger flavor use more ginger or finely grate it.
    • Cut the ginger into small pieces - this way it will release more flavor into the milk.
    • Creamier - add an extra dash of milk for a creamier drink.
    • Make sure you're serving it with hot milk - lukewarm won't be pleasant.
    • The tea: milk: water ratio is completely up to you!
    • If you want a sweeter flavor but want to avoid sugar simply add some stevia to your tea.
    • Use super creamy milk (like coconut milk) for a heavier, thicker version

PS - This is a great drink if you're suffering from a sore throat!

    Substitutions

Two mugs placed next to each other.

Here's how you can adapt this recipe if you are missing any of the ingredients.

    • Milk - use any milk of your choice. If you want frothier results use barista-type milk (like Oatly barista etc).
    • Black tea - If you're not a fan of black tea you can use herbal tea, masala chai tea, ginger tea, etc.
    • Cinnamon - you can use other similar spices such as crushed green cardamom, Indian chai spices, ginger powder, etc.
    • Ginger - if you don't have fresh ginger you can add powdered ginger instead.

    Variations

    • Caffeine free - Opt for caffeine-free black tea or herbal teas that are naturally free from caffeine.
    • Ginger latte - you can also make this drink with coffee. Simply replace the black tea with strong black coffee.
    • Simple syrup - turn up the sweetness factor by adding quick homemade sugar syrup. Just dissolve 4 tablespoon of sugar in a cup of water. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer until reduced to half. Then pour on top of your ginger milk tea when serving.
    • Bubble tea - serve with freshly brewed black tapioca pearls. More bubble tea recipes here.

    FAQ

What does ginger milk tea taste like?

It tastes so comforting, refreshing & slightly spicy due to the ginger & cinnamon.

What kind of sweeteners do you recommend?

I think agave syrup, golden syrup, and maple syrup work best (better than sugar).

    Equipment

All you need to make 2 servings of this ginger milk tea are:

    • 2 mugs
    • A small pot / saucepan
    • Fine mesh sieve*

You'll need this in order to remove the ginger pieces - or you can simply remove them using a spoon or a fork.

    Storage

This drink is best enjoyed fresh!

If you'd like to save it for later, let it cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days before serving.

    Always serve piping hot!
