Ingredients
Tip - Check out the recipe card at the bottom for exact quantities.
- Milk - I used almond milk but you can use soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or any other milk of your choice.
- Ginger - The hero ingredient of this drink. It provides a slightly spicy flavor and can be adjusted to taste.
- Hot water - For best results use freshly boiled water.
- Strong black tea - Serves as a base for this recipe.
- Ground Cinnamon - Gives it an extra comforting kick of flavor.
Optional - if you're a lover of sweet treats you may want to add a sweetener. Liquid sweeteners like maple or agave syrup work best.
Steps
These are just a few quick steps to bringing this ginger milk tea recipe to life!
- 1. Peel and cut ginger into small pieces. (Alternatively, you can grate it.)
- 2. Add ginger to a pan & pour milk on top. Heat it up slowly until piping hot. Don't let it boil.
- 3. In the meantime add tea to boiling water. Let steep for 4 minutes before removing the tea bag/leaves.
- 4. Remove the ginger from your milk (by pouring it through a sieve).
- Optional step - froth the milk using a milk frother or a blender.
- 4. Pour the milk on top of your tea and sprinkle cinnamon on top.
That's all!
Hint: If you want a stronger tea flavor use several bags of tea per cup or let them steep for longer.
Top tips
- For a stronger ginger flavor use more ginger or finely grate it.
- Cut the ginger into small pieces - this way it will release more flavor into the milk.
- Creamier - add an extra dash of milk for a creamier drink.
- Make sure you're serving it with hot milk - lukewarm won't be pleasant.
- The tea: milk: water ratio is completely up to you!
- If you want a sweeter flavor but want to avoid sugar simply add some stevia to your tea.
- Use super creamy milk (like coconut milk) for a heavier, thicker version
PS - This is a great drink if you're suffering from a sore throat!
Substitutions
Here's how you can adapt this recipe if you are missing any of the ingredients.
- Milk - use any milk of your choice. If you want frothier results use barista-type milk (like Oatly barista etc).
- Black tea - If you're not a fan of black tea you can use herbal tea, masala chai tea, ginger tea, etc.
- Cinnamon - you can use other similar spices such as crushed green cardamom, Indian chai spices, ginger powder, etc.
- Ginger - if you don't have fresh ginger you can add powdered ginger instead.
Variations
- Caffeine free - Opt for caffeine-free black tea or herbal teas that are naturally free from caffeine.
- Ginger latte - you can also make this drink with coffee. Simply replace the black tea with strong black coffee.
- Simple syrup - turn up the sweetness factor by adding quick homemade sugar syrup. Just dissolve 4 tablespoon of sugar in a cup of water. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer until reduced to half. Then pour on top of your ginger milk tea when serving.
- Bubble tea - serve with freshly brewed black tapioca pearls. More bubble tea recipes here.
