💌 Why I Love This Recipe

    • Easy to make with simple ingredients
    • There are lots of options to customize it to taste
    • It can be turned into a delicious mocktail
    • You can use any type of tequila (blanco, añejo, etc).

Did you know? A smash-style drink dates back to the 19th Century. It's based on spirits, sugar (or another sweetener), and mint.

    🛒 Ingredients

    • Fresh mint leaves: Provide a refreshing aroma and flavor. They also double up as a topping.
    • Lime juice: Adds a harmonious blend of sweet and tart flavors.
    • Lemon juice: Enhances the citrus notes and adds a tangy kick.
    • Raspberries: Aromatic and floral, they add flavor and the signature red color.
    • Maple syrup: Balances the tartness, making the cocktail sweeter without overpowering it.
    • Tequila (silver or anejo): The star ingredient, lending its unique character to the drink.

    🔪 Equipment

    • Cocktail shaker: For mixing all the ingredients
    • Cocktail muddler: For crushing mint & raspberries.
    • Ice-filled glass: For serving.

    👣 Step-by-Step

Tip: Remember that this is just a quick overview. If you prefer a detailed explanation of the process, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom.

    Step 4 continued.

Two hands adding garnish to a cocktail.

Step 5 - Garnish with a mint sprig, lime slices, and raspberries.

Optionally, add a splash of club soda or Indian tonic water for a fizzier finish.

Serve your refreshing tequila smash immediately - it's best enjoyed fresh.

Prefer a mocktail? Skip the tequila or use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute.

    🔄 Substitutes

This recipe is very forgiving. I recommend using the ingredients you've already got at home rather than buying specific additions, especially if you're not likely to use them again.

Here are some possible substitutions that you might already have at home.

    • Maple syrup can be substituted with agave syrup, brown sugar, granulated sugar, or a pinch of stevia.
    • Raspberries can be replaced by fresh blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, or red currants.
    • Mint's best substitution is lemon verbena. You could also try basil or cilantro, but the flavor will change.

    💡 Chef’s Tips

    • Adjust the sweetness - You might prefer a sweeter version or want to omit sugar altogether.
    • Velvety Smooth - Double strain the cocktail before serving. You want to ensure no fruit pulp, seeds, or small ice shards remain.
    • Intense Version - Prepare the cocktail ahead of time and chill it in the refrigerator. This will provide a more intense flavor infusion.
    • Garnish Game - Cocktails are all about presentation. Add garnishings and a fun straw to create visual appeal.
    • Extra Flair - Decorate the rim of your glass with a mixture of sugar and lime zest before pouring the cocktail.

    🤔 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen raspberries instead of fresh ones?

    Yes!

Fresh raspberries will be easier to muddle, but you can also simply let frozen raspberries thaw. This will soften them and make them easier to muddle.

What’s the difference between añejo and silver tequila?

Silver (white, blanco) tequila has a clear appearance and a crisper, harsher flavor.

Añejo tequila, on the other hand, is aged in oak barrels for 1 to 3 years.

It's considered a more premium drink with subtle notes of vanilla, caramel & dried fruit (Source: Liquor).

    🍓 Variations

    • Strawberry Tequila Smash: Use fresh strawberries instead of raspberries for a sweeter twist.
    • Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail: Use strawberry lemonade instead of lime and lemon juice.
    • Blood Orange Tequila Smash: Replace lemon & lime juice with freshly squeezed blood orange juice.
    • Pomegranate Tequila Smash: Add a splash of pomegranate juice for a tangy and visually striking variation.
    • Coconut Tequila Smash: Replace either lemon or lime juice with a dash of coconut water.
