Expert Tips
1. Customise It
The beauty of this recipe is that you can customise it to your heart’s content.
Want to make it sweeter? Just add sugar to your pan whilst preparing your blueberry syrup. Or you could use sweetened tonic water.
Not a fan of lime? No problem, swap for lemon or even orange!
Want a low alcohol version? Simply just adjust to taste.
Maybe you’d like to experiment with different sweeteners like maple or agave? Not a problem!
This recipe is a fantastic base, but unlike my baking recipes, it will still work even if you leave some bits out or customise them.
2. Prep your syrup ahead of time
Want to make a party cocktail and save yourself some time on the big day?
Simply just make your blueberry syrup ahead of time. Let it cool down completely, then store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Make sure it’s stored in an airtight container to prevent it from acquiring any other food smells.
When your guests have arrived all you need to do is just fill the glasses with cocktails, gin, tonic water & syrup!
This will take you just a few minutes, meaning you can spend more time chatting away with your friends (or maybe making another party snack!)
3. Don’t discard the blueberries
Once you’ve pressed your blueberry syrup through a sieve, make sure you don’t discard the leftover blueberries.
We’re very serious about preventing food waste here at My Vegan Minimalist so here’s a few ideas of what you could do.
First, you’ll need to store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Then you can:
- Sprinkle on top of your morning porridge or granola
- Add some banana, liquid and other fruit to make a smoothie
- Add to cakes or other bakes
- Freeze for later
F.A.Q.
You can definitely make the blueberry syrup ahead of time. However, I wouldn’t recommend making the whole drink if you’re not going to serve it immediately.
The ice will melt and the tonic water will lose its delicious air bubbles, making your cocktail a lot less fun!
Simply just leave out the gin and add some more tonic water/blueberry syrup. It’s really that easy!
This recipe has been tested both as a cocktail and as a mocktail and passed both tests with flying colours.
I would say you can use any gin that you like! My go-to is London dry gin.
I would not recommend doing that. Soda water doesn’t have the distinct citrus flavour that makes tonic water work so well in this recipe.
Yes, all the recipes on this blog are vegan and many are gluten-free. This cocktail is both! You can read more about why gin is gluten-free and what to watch out for here.
