Why salt-free?
There are several reasons why someone might be wanting to switch to a salt-free seasoning mix.
They might prefer less salty food, have health conditions that require reduced sodium intake, or simply want to adjust the salt levels for each dish.
This is where low sodium or no salt seasoning mixes come in handy.
I’ve tested these three mixes to perfection to bring you my best blends for all occasions. Let’s get spicy!
Italian
This classic Italian salt-free seasoning blend will transport you straight to a sunny Italian terrace in a small seaside town. Or well, at least that’s the plan!
Filled with gorgeous aromas and flavours of oregano, parsley, rosemary, thyme & basil this mix is your ultimate all-purpose solution.
It goes so well with many types of pasta, risotto, pizza, tomato soup, lasagne, bruschetta, or summer salads.
It’s not restricted to just Italian cuisine though. In fact, it’s so versatile it can enhance almost any savoury dish or snack.
I love sprinkling it over a simple open sandwich (scroll down for a photo) or adding it to my burgers, bagels, dips, savoury pancakes, or fresh homemade bread.
It also works particularly well with any dishes heavy with garlic.
Hot & Spicy
I wasn’t joking when I said hot & spicy.
This one is packed with both chili powder and chili flakes, plus an additional punch of black pepper. It’s then balanced off perfectly by earthy ground coriander/cilantro and ginger.
If you like spicy food, this is your new go-to seasoning mix. You truly need to try it to believe it!
It can be sprinkled over practically any savoury dish, but works particularly well in curries, bean chilis, noodle soups, tacos, wraps, and more.
It’s also the ideal seasoning base for a spicy salsa. I like sprinkled it over scrambled tofu or adding a generous amount to my avocado on toast.
Smoky
To complete our dream trio of salt free seasoning blends, we’ve got to make our smoky mix.
Based on smoked paprika, onion powder & paprika, this mix has a deep flavour balanced off by aromatic ground cumin and garlic powder.
One of my favourite ways to use it is as a salt free rub – it works with practically anything ranging from (mock) meat and fish to tofu, veggies, cheese and more.
You can use it either as a dry rub or mix it with oil to create a smoky marinade.
Aside from marinating, you can use it in soups, stews, curries or even pastas. I love sprinkling it over homemade fries or oven-baked veggies. It’s also a must in my baked mac & cheese.
Whatever dish you add it to it always brings out that extra zing and punch that makes your food go from 'ok' to 'wow' in a few seconds.
FAQ
Yes, these mixes are a great healthy alternative. They give you all the flavour of regular spice mixes but without any salt.
It’s all in the spices!
Often, you can mask the lack of salt by adding more spices.
Additionally, including a citrus element into your dish can help too.
You might also want to add a drizzle of vinegar depending on the dish.
Tips & Tricks
- Customise it according to taste. Leave out any spices you don’t like and swap them out for others.
- Italian – some customisation ideas include sage, bay leaves, and marjoram.
- Hot & Spicy – try customising with onion powder, lemon peel and roasted sesame seeds.
- Smoky - dry mustard, chili powder, cumin, oregano & brown sugar are good additions too.
Storing
Once you’ve got your salt free seasoning blend ready, you’ll want to store it correctly.
Pop them in a clean, airtight container and store them in a cool, dark cupboard next to your other spices.
No need to buy any fancy jars, just reuse any spice jars you’ve got lying around. Just make sure to give them a good wash!
There’s no expiration date, but they might grow less intense in flavour if you don’t use them up within a few months.
Before each use I recommend giving the jar a good shake! This will make sure the spices are distributed more equally.
